Really Amazing: Reflections on Awe, Nature, and God's Greatness
Quiet Moments on the Upper Deck
Susan and I love to sit on our upper deck here at the Jersey Shore.
A few weeks ago, it was early evening, the sun had just about disappeared over the bay and a sliver of the moon was shining in the distant sky. We were sitting quietly and, in our time of silence, I was simply looking around.
Recognizing Man’s Amazing Achievements
I saw the beautiful houses surrounding us and thought:
“Those houses are amazing.”
Then I gazed at the orange light and the magnificent clouds around the fading sunset:
“But that piece of art is really amazing.”
I heard cars passing by:
“Wow, man’s ingenuity is amazing.”
I noticed someone talking on her phone:
“Wireless communication — how amazing.”
Then, a Shift: Marveling at God
And then I looked up…
At the moon.
At the stars beginning to appear.
At the vast sky.
At the ocean waves I could hear in the distance.
At the precious human being holding that phone…
“But God’s creative ability is really amazing.”
“But God is really amazing.”
The Profound Difference
Man does amazing things.
But God does really amazing things.
Mankind has abilities.
But God has really amazing abilities.
Human beings are amazing.
But God is really amazing.
Remembering in Stillness and Scripture
In the silence — and through Scripture — I am reminded of what an amazing God we have.
No matter the difficulties we face…
No matter the past we’ve lived…
No matter the future we fear or anticipate…
We do so with an amazing God.
A really amazing God.
A Song That Still Speaks
It’s an older song now (2004), and it’s not sung in churches as often as it used to be, but I’ve always loved “Indescribable” by Chris Tomlin.
It still captures that awe so well. Here are some of the lyrics:
Indescribable — Chris Tomlin
From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
An Invitation to Wonder
I hope you take the time this week to:
Stop
Reflect
Listen
Ponder
...just how amazing our God is.
Reflection: What Makes You Stand in Awe?
What do you think?
How does it make you feel?
Blessings,
Steven
